Where We Work: Boston and 30 Miles Around

Remodeling in Boston and the towns around it

We remodel kitchens, bathrooms and whole houses, and build additions, from our office in the South End. We work within about 30 miles of it.

About 30 miles from the South End

Our office is at 234 W Newton St. From there we go west along Route 9 to Wellesley, out Route 2 to Lexington, north to Winchester and south to Hingham.

If your town is not on the lists below, call anyway. A house a few miles past the line is usually fine.

Neighborhoods inside Boston

Inside the city, building permits go through the Inspectional Services Department. In Back Bay, Beacon Hill and the South End, exterior changes also go to the neighborhood’s architectural or landmark commission.

A dumpster on the street needs a street occupancy permit. Condo work usually needs the association’s sign-off, and the building will have its own rules on work hours and elevator use. We handle this paperwork as part of the job.

Dorchester’s triple-deckers add shared stairs, cast-iron drains and a neighbor below the work.

Towns outside the city

Every town has its own building department and its own habits. Somerville and Cambridge have triple-deckers too, and Cambridge sends older houses to its Historical Commission. Brookline and Newton’s villages, from Auburndale to Chestnut Hill, are full of Victorians with plaster walls and knob-and-tube wiring. Needham, Lexington and Wellesley lean toward Colonials and Capes, which take an addition well.

After more than twenty years in Massachusetts construction, none of this is new to us.

How distance affects the schedule

Travel changes the schedule more than the price. A crew that starts in Hingham at 7 AM cannot also start in Arlington that morning, so we set start dates with the drive in mind. Your project manager gives you the date and keeps you posted every week.

In the city, the schedule also bends around parking, loading zones and condo rules on hours. Winter matters everywhere. Snow slows deliveries and stops exterior work, so an addition is best closed in before the ground freezes.
