Where the murals go

A mural is usually one wall: a living room, a dining room, a nursery. Restaurants want the wall guests see from the sidewalk. Offices want the lobby or the room on every video call.

Not every job is a picture. Limewash effects, stripes and panels, stenciled ceilings, gold-leaf house numbers on a South End transom.

You approve the sketch first

We start with a pencil sketch scaled to your wall, then a color version. Nothing goes on the wall until you sign off on both.

Colors read differently under your lamps than on a screen. We paint the main shades on a board and leave it in the room for a day before you decide.

Paints that hold up

We use artist-grade acrylics and interior latex, not craft paint. Nurseries get zero-VOC paint, so the room can be used again the same evening.

Kitchens, dining rooms and restaurants get a clear matte topcoat. It stands up to wiping and the occasional sauce splash.

How long a wall takes

A single accent wall with a simple design usually takes two to four days. A detailed scene across a whole room is more often one to two weeks. Add a day for the topcoat to cure before furniture goes back.

Prep adds time in older houses. Plaster in a Jamaica Plain Victorian or Beacon Hill row house often needs cracks filled and a skim coat first. We say so at the site visit, not after.

How a mural project runs

  1. Site visit

We measure the wall, check the plaster and look at the light. Bring any pictures you have saved.

  2. Sketch and colors

You get a scaled drawing and painted color samples. Two rounds of changes are normal.

  3. Painting

We cover the floor and furniture, prep the wall and paint. In a Boston condo we follow the building’s hours and elevator rules.

  4. Walkthrough

We go over the finished wall with you and leave a small jar of each color for touch-ups.

Questions people ask about murals

Can a mural be painted over later?

Yes. It is interior paint on a primed wall. Two coats of primer and your new color cover it.

Can you paint on old plaster or textured walls?

Yes, but texture shows through fine detail. For detailed work we skim the wall smooth first. A bold, simple design can go straight on.

Can you work in a restaurant that is open?

We paint during closed hours and cover the work between sessions. Low-odor paints mean no smell at service.

Can the mural match a kitchen or bath you are remodeling for us?

The design goes into the 3D rendering of the kitchen or bathroom. We schedule the painting after the dust is gone.
